Over 1.6 Million Iranians Register for Arbaeen Pilgrimage

With a week to go before Arbaeen, official said some 1.65 million Iranians have registered for taking part in the annual Arbaeen pilgrimage.

Officials with Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization said there are only 4 days left for registration at Samah website.

They also said some 1.5 million Iranians have received visas for traveling to Iraq.

Registration for the pilgrimage at the website began on October 7.

More than 2 million Iranians are expected to take part in this year’s pilgrimage.

Arbaeen, which is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to the Iraqi city of Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

Arbaeen falls on October 30 this year.
